The shipyard diaries. Saturday the somethingth.

I woke up, completely sober and aware around 0030.  I watched some streaming from netflix.  I'm watching "the Office" usa style.  I am enjoying it because there are so many different personalities in play, as opposed to the original.  However, the never-ending dramaz, as opposed to the original, both poke and yank my heartstrings and I end up as dissatisfied as I was when I was a "days of our Lives" junkie.

So I finally fell back to sleep around 0530, only to have to get up at 0600.  I showered, put on the clothes I've been wearing for at least two weeks, and shuttled my shipmates to the dry-dock.  I received some cryptic emails about the network that I'm supposedly maintaining and waited unti about 0900 for the captain to appear and disburse two days of per-diem.  Following that The Master-Chief and I went shopping for all the parts I need to re-build the system I pictured yesterday.  They had everything except for a 1" check-valve (schedule 80 PVC) so we went for a drive to see the house where the master chief lived in when the master chief's daughter was born we returned to the ship just in time for us to take the other 2 engineers I'm spending my time with out to lunch.

Lunch was...Good.  I don't feel like typing out all the BS involved, but we were the only people in this Cajun joint, and the propritor was all too willing to stand next to us and tell us his life story.  At a bar, that's OK.  In a restaurant, it irritates the living fuck out of me.

Because we won't have the 1" check-valve until Tuesday, I spent the rest of the afternoon in my van, alternately snoozing and listening to NPR, or the both.

There is so much more.  I could write volumes about today, as I can about every day, but I'm fucking drained.  And I just want to drink vodka and watch more television.

I started watching back to front. I reversed myself, and I just finished the Casino episode. Maybe season 3? It makes me so very sad because Michael Scott strikes so many chords with me. David Brent, much less so, but the "JIM" character, which garners much sympathy from me in the UK version, elicits almost zilch with the USA version. Namely, because "jim" (or whatever the fuck his name is) in the UK is EMINENTLY believable and identifiable, the analogue in the USA version is just another stereotype to emulate. If you dig. Anyway. The UK version had the advantage of being finite. On the other hand, the USA version gives us character conflict with the HR dude and Scott, which I find is more humorous than any situation the UK version lent us.

Anyway, I'm going back to listen to my HAT FM.

The thing about Jim v. Tim (no wonder I couldn't figure out tim's name...) is that Tim is a true underdog, with his believable shyness and respect for Dawn's relationship and physical inferiority of Dawn's fiancee. Where as Jim is the kind of guy that I have a hard time believing that he wouldn't be going out and picking up chicks left and right, no matter how bright a torch he holds for Pam. He's on an even playing field with Pam's boyfriend, in both attractiveness and the whole male physical dominance thing (e.g. when he nails pam's fiancee in the basketball episode).

I guess I can sum the whole thing up with the fact that you would never believe that Jim would get "Hat FM" from his mother on his birthday.

Like I said, I started out by watching the last few episodes on HULU and am now watching from the beginning on netflix, just now in the beginning of season 3. The whole thing with Jim and the chick at the Scranton branch totally screws with the chemistry that made the office xmas special so fucking poignant.

However, after actually having a dream about the office last night, I think I'm getting a little sick of it at this point. The UK version will always be superior, however, I wish there had been a UK Toby.

yeah, it's on instant. first 2 series, at least. But even still, untill you see the "if you don't know me by now" video, those first 2 series are kind of hollow. (again, that video being a benchmark difference between the two managers...The doves and the flowing white linen, oh god! if S. can't find humor in that, I suggest a swift divorce and shit.)
